Invite: Pickleball - October 28th

We have two long-term pickleball tournaments going on (singles and doubles), and we'll add some new players to the fray next Wednesday starting at 5:30pm to close at the turnaround at the end of the Blue Canyon Apartments parking lot at 5 Honovi Drive. Bring some snacks for the potluck and dress for the weather!

Invite: Flag Football - November 26th

Thanksgiving is traditionally a day for feasts and (American) football. Some watch, some play. This year we'll be playing the flag variety of the sport, just ahead of its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028. Location in Tuba City TBD. Anticipate a morning game before an afternoon feast.

Just Finished: Badminton IV: Doubles II

Last month, the adults took over the playground in Tuba City's east hospital neighborhood. Badminton was the name of the game, and we had plenty of new faces out on the court. However, the MVP of the day was faceless, and you can call him the breeze.

In game one, Team Khaki took to the court in striking coordinated (and unplanned) attire. Those all whites played downwind and had a distinct advantage over Team Watermelon (who had unplanned but coordinated potluck offerings). At the first team to score 11 points, the teams switched sides. The Watermelons began to strike back, but it was too little too late, and the Khaki boys made it to 21 points to win the game first, up by 11.

Khaki switched sides and then took on the next competitors: Cuba. Now you'd think a national team could easily bat a shuttlecock past a team only known for their fashion, and you'd be right about the first half. Sylvia and Gus dusted off their old tennis skills and made quite a racket. But Khaki's Erik and Gustave waited for the winds to change and then roared back in the second half, facing alee, and won 21-17.

The Watermelons returned from the bench for a second chance in game three. Newcomers, Team Playground, left their kids/neighbors to fend for themselves on the playset while they did their best to serve cross-court. Playing into the wind was getting unbearable, and also unbearable was Elena being away from Teresa, so Teresa played a few volleys holding a toddler with her non-dominant arm. In the end, Sam and Rickey brought glory to the Watermelon name with a 21-18 win - the closest of the day.

The final game, as winds were whipping up and momentum was winding down, was played by two fresh teams. Eric and Madison formed Team Smoothie and took on Rob and Lauren on Team Cheese-Itz. The Smoothies started out strong, but after switching sides, the Cheese-Itz were the ones wearing their team name on their face as they smiled to a 21-14 victory, again playing downwind.

What's Next?

December will likely be a remote event so that we can bring the whole gang together in competition, as we typically do once a year. Suggestions will be noted while picking the event.

See you at the next event!
