Running with the Turkeys

Newly Minted Medals

Olympians,

The music event has entered the voting rounds and we can now turn our attention to one of the darkest months of the year, and a new event to liven it up.

NOW though November 30th- Athletics XIV: 3000m Team Race - Anywhere!

In honor of Turkey Trots everywhere, and our highly successful 5km remote running event in 2019, we bring you the 3000m Team Race as an event anyone anywhere can enter this month. A throwback to the 1912 through 1924 Olympics, the 3000m Team Race included teams of three or more running a 3k race.

In Our competition, you can participate simply by sending in your timed 3k run from anytime this month. The times will then be put on a leaderboard, and each region's team will score points from its top three finishers. Teams will be determined by the region where you reside, not who you run with or where you run. Regions are divided by US states and other countries.

FAQ:

  • How can I be sure that I'll have a team of at least 3 from my state/country?
    • Invite friends to run with you and submit times! If a region has less than three runners, points will be given for ghost runners finishing last
    • Ask Gustave if he knows who else might be running from your region
  • Where can my run take place?
    • Anywhere: a running track, the road, a trail, a treadmill, etc.
  • How do I determine I ran 3000 meters?
    • If using a track, 3000 meters is seven and a half laps on the inside lane/lane 1
    • Use Strava or other running/location apps to track distance
    • Measure out a route with Google Maps, Google Earth, or similar mapping applications before your run
  • Can I submit multiple times?
    • Yes! You're encouraged to get out and run this month, and if you are able to improve, submit your new time!
  • How is this scored, again?
    • All of the finishers who are in the top three of their region get ranked based on their finishing position, and receive a score equivalent to this rank. i.e. the ninth finisher who is in the top three runners for any region would get a score of 9. The team score is the total of the top three runners on that team, with a lower number being better.
  • What's the benchmark to beat from the 1924 Olympics?
    • The Polish Team was eliminated in a semifinal with a score of 41 points from a 12, 14, and 15 point finish by their top three (and only three) runners. 15 was the worst score of any individual finishing runner. For a point of reference, the Finnish Team won that semifinal with a score of 6 points, with three of their runners finishing 1, 2, 3.

But wait, what's with those medals at the top?

In 2019 we held a medal design competition. Jennifer Sexauer's dahlia submission won, and the design has finally made it onto medals that will be wearable by the winners at future in-person events.

What's Next?

Winter is on the horizon, so we're pulling out the Calgary '88 promotional pamphlet and seeing what equipment we can get our hands on. Looks like some curling may be in our future! Also, the results from the music event will be coming soon.

Our Olympics
