Boast: Just won a 5k!

Olympians,

After a prolonged (and quite fun) summer break, we're easing back into events. We've left our tiny apartment in the brave little state of Vermont for a giant three bedroom about an hour away from the Grand Canyon. As we continue to work on meeting people here, there may be more "anywhere" events than normal, for past and future competitors to join at will. Cue the first of these:

NOW though Halloween - Art III: Music

It's true. Music has been a medal event at the Olympic Games. Three categories divided up orchestral, instrumental, and choral music, but all had to be "inspired by sport". Our competition will be structured a little differently:

Create an original* song as your personal theme or anthem. Think of it like the intro to your own TV show, your pump up song as you step up to bat, or a ditty that you whistle as you amble down the street. All instruments, including your own voice, are fair game. You may also use other people or electronics to play your music, as long as you composed it yourself.

*The song must be original in that it can't be a straight cover of an existing song. You can borrow some beats or rhythms, but you should own how you mix it.

You have until the clock strikes midnight on Halloween night to submit your song!

Judging will be in two rounds. The first will determine the top four pieces, and the second round will determine the final positioning of the best four. Everyone who submitted a piece gets to be a judge.

What's Next?

Every new place we've lived takes a bit to settle into, but we'll be on the lookout as always to find the most promising athletes, equipment, and venues on or near the Navajo Nation. If we find ourselves on the road with willing participants though, Our Games can come to you!

Coming up in November, we will put a spin on the traditional Turkey Trot, and attempt a "Team Race", which was a staple of the Olympic Games from 1900 to 1924.

How it will work: Entrants will run 3000m/3k and time themselves. We'll keep track of everyone's times on a leaderboard and what state or country (if outside of the USA) each person lives in. For each region that had three or more people send in times, the final positions will be totaled up for the top three runners to give that "team" its final score. If you are worried about your state or country being short on runners, invite some friends! Stay tuned for specific dates of the competition at the start of next month.

Other possible upcoming events:

  • Archery: Team...with your bow, Sean?
  • Canoeing: C1 200m... if we can find canoe paddles?
  • Cross-country Skiing: 10k...once Nordic Village opens?
  • Freestyle Skiing: Slopestyle...once Snowbowl opens?
  • Skateboarding: Park...at Louise Yellowman Park?
  • Sport Climbing: Speed Climbing...who has a rope?
  • Swimming: 200m Freestyle...at a pool near you?
  • Suggest or host your own idea! See the full list of potential events from the Olympics, past and present.
