Attendance Record = Broken

Olympians, 

Thanks to everyone who showed up for ice dancing on Friday night. We broke our in-person attendance record set during mini golf back in April 2019 with the 13 who showed up at center ice last week!

Just Finished: Figure Skating II: Ice Dance

Pranks be darned, we actually held an event on April Fool's Day, but I'm sorry to report it wasn't extreme ironing. Instead, 13 skaters turned out for our foray into ice dancing! Pairs had just 20 minutes to plan a routine and rehearse before presenting their minute-long show live before their competitors acting as judges. Isabella and Kelly bravely went first in their matching attire, at the mercy of the untrained judges preliminary marks on a 6 point scale. Laura and Emma followed them up with a heart warming routine. Following that, we saw a variety of themed routines from the underwater love story by C and Luna, the four seasons interpreted by Julia and Ayden, and a hide and seek chase by Alex and Kelly. As the 6.0s were hoisted high, the bronze was given to Ayden and Julia in matching sparkling dresses, hindered or maybe helped by the fact that Julia screeched her way through technical moves wearing speed skates. Gustave's finale lift of Katrina earned that duo a silver medal. And finally, after the most synchronous skating we witnessed all night, including matching denim jackets tossed to the crowd, Leila and Maya skated off with the win and the hearts of the judges. Cue the Zambonis and broomball!

What's Next?

Who's got equipment? We're on the lookout for equipment and venues that will make the next event possible. Murmurs of basketball, field hockey, and swimming are making waves. Please reach out if you have a good idea!

Going It Alone

  1st Place, unopposed Olympians, I recently signed up for a Nordic ski race and wasn't able to rouse any of Our friends to make the drive to compete in Flagstaff, but was determined to enter the race solo. As I went to retrieve my registration packet I announced that I was in the 10km classic race and got the reply, "You must be Gustave! You're the only one in that division." Racing at Nordic Village got me thinking about the future of Our Olympics, and the struggle it is for anyone, myself included, to agree to try something new or to even have the free time to do it. Our Games have periodically struggled with attendance, but after joining a race organized by an outside organization and finding myself alone in my division, it's clear that Our Olympics is no worse off than larger and more established sporting groups.
