Endless Summer

Two feet and a board...all it takes to win.

Olympians,

For those of you tracking the bottom of these blog posts the past seven months, you'll note that it's time to announce the winners to the send-in-your-video surfing competition!

Just Finished - SURFING

Talking surfing in the middle of winter? Yep. Although all five competitors braved the Pacific in the summertime or fall when the water was the warmest, I'd like to give a shout out to those who's season just began, surfing the winter storm swells on the Great Lakes.

Back to the endless summer, how did our athletes do? If you missed the action, watch the videos here. Thanks to eight of you who took a seat behind the judge's booth anonymously, we now have an answer. Seemingly a miracle, out of five competitors, all ride off into the sunset with a medal. Yes, Greg Nigon, Gustave Sexauer, and Kate Nigon had a three-way tie with 22 points for the bronze medal. Katrina Sexauer pleased the judges, earning 27 points for her time atop Poseidon's washing machine. And Luke Yarnall, the favorite going into the event and skateboard event gold medalist, pulled off a clear victory with 36 points!

Interview with gold medalist, Luke Yarnall

What's your prior experience surfing?

Yarnall: Like Keanu Reeves in the iconic Point Break, I moved to Southern California at age 26 and bought a surfboard. Unlike Keanu Reeves in Point Break, I've neither disrupted a major criminal gang, nor became good at surfing, but one can always dream.

Were you afraid of sharks? If not, what are you most scared of?

Yarnall: Sharks are friends, and I'm never afraid of my friends. As FDR said, the only thing to fear is bad vibes.

How many times did you try to stand that day?

Yarnall: I stand up on the board every wave. I even paddle out standing up.

If you had to surf in a different liquid, which would you choose and why?

Yarnall: Maple syrup. That would be super sweet.

If you had to make up a slang word in beach life lingo, what would it be?

Yarnall: Vibracious. It's the adjective form of vibe. Example: "What up, dude? That wild sunset was vibracious."

What's Next? - FREESTYLE SKIING I: BIG AIR

Once the conditions are right at Hard'ack, a free ski area in St. Albans, VT, everyone will be invited to put their best trick on the line in Skiing Big Air, and depending on the attendees' equipment... Snowboard Big Air!

Also, we heard from the eight surfing judges that the next remote events should be: Athletics: 3000m, Skateboarding: Park, and Gymnastics: Rings. So stay tuned!

Happy New Year from Our Olympics,

-Gustave
