A Quick One

After a full evening of archery, the target wasn't much worse for the wear!

Just Finished: Archery III: Teams of 2

Meet us at the shooting range is not a phrase I imagined myself saying, but there we were on a hot summer evening next to the Tuba City wastewater treatment plant, no less. Five teams of two vied to win the tournament, but more importantly, just to hit the target with an arrow. With the target set at 70' away since the cheap bow wouldn't shoot an Olympic distance of 70m, target practice began. Fletchings bounced joyfully away from the Command hook arrow rest (added just prior to show time) and directed the flight path of the arrows time after time into that bush to the right of the target. With practice over, the target was moved in to 45' for maximum chance of success. Team Hot and Spicy (Val and Rickey) started out consistently hitting the target, once we determined that the hay bale counted for two points, the cardboard backing of the target three, and the white part of the target four... Honduras (Diana and Jordan) couldn't keep up with the bale strikes and Hot and Spicy assumed they qualified for the semi-final.

In match two, the Med Students (Courtney and Nick) balked at having to face off against their attending physician Katrina Sexauer. Little did they know that the Flies (Katrina and Gabi) were aiming for last place, or to just hit the bale once, which ever was easier. The Med Students had to take it to four sets, but Courtney led the way in hits on target, positioning them in a promising position for the final.

With Team Bike Crash (Steve and Gustave) set to play Hot and Spicy, nerves were tense as the Sun declined and the meat lay yet to be grilled back in town for the after party. To speed things up, Katrina rewrote the format, putting Bike Crash into the final for their first match, up against the Med Students. With the Med Students shut out in the first set, it seemed the writing was on the wall, but in set two Courtney and Nick fought back by scoring 11 points, the most of any set in the tournament. They continued their tirade through set three as the light began to fade and even the afternoon winds began to calm. Taking it to the fourth and final set, Bike Crash bounced back, again shutting out the Students. In lieu of a shoot-out, Katrina declared the winner based on total points in the round: 24 to 16, handing it to Bike Crash. It just goes to show that if you have scraped some flesh off your knee or show up to the tournament with a wrist brace from a frightening crash, you can still handle a bow with skill.

¡Hasta la!
